Lower 9th Ward…..
CNET Networks Blogger Daniel Terdiman makes a yearly road trip across the country. The trip length varies each year but he is able to obtain some of the best behind the scenes access to the places he chooses to stop at along the way.
This year Daniel has been trekking his way through the South. While most of his posts consist of places like NASA Space Camp or the Gibson Guitar Factory, this last week took him to New Orleans. He was clearly disturbed by the amount of devestation that is still so evident in the city. This is all too apparent in the not famous “9th Ward”.
The picture above is of a sign at the edge of 9th Ward. I found it best described in Daniel’s own words.
In the three years since Hurricane Katrina, a kind of disaster tourism has sprung up, with many people paying for bus tours of the Lower Ninth Ward and other areas to see the destruction. This sign castigates those visitors for paying for such tours and for not stopping to get out and actually experience close-up the destruction and a site where so many died.
The picture says a lot. I will let you, through your own convictions, come to your own conclusion.
